چکیده

Of the several deleterious consequences that sex chromosome meiotic drive can have for a population, extinction is the most severe. Several studies of this phenomenon have suggested that males carrying a driving X chromosome may be disadvantaged during sperm competition. Deterministic modeling indicates that sperm competition can maintain a balanced polymorphism of driving and non-driving X chromosomes, but that if the frequency of the driving chromosomes exceeds some threshold value, then these chromosomes will spread to fi xation and the population will go extinct. In this article we present the results of individual-based simulations of a stochastic model of X chromosome drive in fi nite and structured populations. We show that in large populations the balanced polymorphism can be maintained for hundreds of thousands of generations, but that reductions in population size and certain forms of population structure promote fi xation of the driving chromosome.

Sperm competition and the dynamics of X chromosome drive: stability and extinction.

Several empirical studies of sperm competition in populations polymorphic for a driving X chromosome have revealed that Sex-ratio males (those carrying a driving X) are at a disadvantage relative to Standard males. Because the frequency of the driving X chromosome determines the population-level sex ratio and thus alters male and female mating rates, the evolutionary consequences of sperm compe...

The population genetics of using homing endonuclease genes in vector and pest management.

Homing endonuclease genes (HEGs) encode proteins that in the heterozygous state cause double-strand breaks in the homologous chromosome at the precise position opposite the HEG. If the double-strand break is repaired using the homologous chromosome, the HEG becomes homozygous, and this represents a powerful genetic drive mechanism that might be used as a tool in managing vector or pest populati...

Chromosome Number Variation in Iranian Populations of Acorus calamus

Different ploidy levels, diploid (2n=2x=24) to hexaploid (2n=6x=72) have been reported for Acorus calamus, a perennial medicinal plant. According to available information, there is a significant relationship between the ploidy level and essential oil compositions and medicinal properties of this important genetic resource. However, there is no information about the chromosome number of A. calam...

The Effect of Diffrent Factors on X- and Y Bearing Sperm in Bull Semen

Background: Newborn gender ratio is one of the most important factors in livestock industry. This ratio has affected on economic condition and controls sex-linked genetically transferred diseases. Offspring sex ratio is affected by such various factors. One of these factors is the Y to X bearing sperm ratio in normal semen that is called primary sex ratio, season and individual differences are ...

Meiotic drive alters sperm competitive ability in stalk-eyed flies.

Meiotic drive results when sperm carrying a driving chromosome preferentially survive development. Meiotic drive should therefore influence sperm competition because drive males produce fewer sperm than non-drive males. Whether meiotic drive also influences the competitive ability of sperm after ejaculation is unknown. Here we report the results from reciprocal crosses that are designed for est...
